DFI - Session 8 - 17/09/2021

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Use the word Agency carefully with our whanau. Empowered has a far more positive outcome.

Time to explore TKI resources

It was great to have the time to explore the resources on TKI  - I have found on this course it has been absolutely fantastic to be allowed the time to explore on our own. Teaching makes us so busy so having that time within our day is invaluable.

Scratch

I loved having a play on Scratch and this is something I would love to include in my classroom going forward. This is a great stepping stone into coding and I think it wall be something my kids will love!

I will need to do a bit more practise before introducing it, so I know what I am talking about!

Final reflection
As the last day of DFI teaching comes to a close I reflect on the things I have learnt and the way I have implemented new learning into my classroom. This course has been perfect timing as I felt a lot more confident within my own abilities during our online lockdown teaching. It is also wonderful to have all the slideshows ect to be able to use them for rewindable learning in the future.

Thanks, it has been a blast!

DFI - Session 7 - 10/09/2021

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Manaiakalani provides the opportunity for students to connect with the learning outside of school hours. This enhances the children's ability to engage with their work when suits them outside of school hours.

To try and combat the summer slide the Summer Learning Journey was created for children to use over the summer holidays. 1 activity a day for 30 mins. Then this activity is added onto the students blogs, where others can post positive comments.

Chromebooks - Digital Dig

Was a little tricky to do this without a Chromebook to practise on, but could see it was very helpful to the teachers who have 1:1 Chromebooks in their classrooms.

Really want to try and push going forward to have 1:1 iPads in our junior classrooms so we can utilise as much of this DFI learning as possible.

iPads

We only have around 10 iPads in our learning space with 52 children, so it does make working on an iPad rather tricky. But we have been doing tasks on Explain Everything now for about a year or so. I used it a lot last year with my year 1/2 specifically during reading.

It was great having a play on Explain Everything and just refreshing my own memory as we haven't used it much this year.

Reflecting on the Kaupapa of the Manaiakalani Programme in light of COVID 19 , whether you did Lockdown: Season 1 or Seasons 2/3/4, and YOUR readiness for ubiquitous learning...

  • What are you proud of?

  • What do you regret?

  • What have you taken forward into the ‘new’ era of schooling?

I am really proud of the way I have produced our Google Slides over lockdown and being a part of DFI really helped!! I was able to be the tech support person for my team leader, which was great!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE MOTE!!!

DFI - Session 6 - 3/09/2021

Quite a tricky day, jumping in and out for other Google Meets with students and hub teachers. But did manage to get most of the tasks done.

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Building connections between schools and teachers. Creates a shared language to be used for all students. Shared focus and goals throughout all of the schools within Manaiakalani.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Sites, Sites and more Sites

Wow!!! This was fantastic. Although my students don't have access to 1:1 iPads which limits us a little, I was able to make a Site for maths that our whole hub can use. It was fabulous to have enough time to create and play around with this during the day. As I was starting from scratch, I will have to spend some more time getting it finished and the other teachers in my space can also add to it. It will be interesting to see how using this will work with my learners when we return from lockdown. Take a look at my maths site here.

I even managed to add tabs for each of our maths strands too!

DFI - Session 5 - 27/08/2021

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Visible

Clear direction for the learners and their families. Visible learning - The whole journey is visible and shared with the learner. Students can see where they are heading and what is happening next. This is a really important aspect that can sometimes be overlooked. This is a little tricky in my situation, with year 0/1 children, but good to remember if I move into different levels.

Using Jamboard

This was great to use in our mini groups today and would be an awesome tool to use in the classroom. This would make it easy for everyone to share their thoughts and ideas at the same time and all in one place. The sticky notes function is fabulous as no sticky notes can get lost, which often happens in the classroom. Would also be very useful in a staff meeting setting too!

Junior Multimodal Site Planning

This was a great opportunity to collaborate with other junior teachers to discuss and create a resource bank that we can transfer into the classroom.

This has been linked here for rewindable learning.

Google Sites

Wow! It was awesome to have the time to explore creating a Google Site. I have never used Sites before so this was a bit of a learning experience. Once I got into it, I found it quite easy to navigate and was able to create a Google Site around the Rainbow Fish story. These skills will be really useful for interacting with big book activities in my junior classroom. This is how I will begin introducing Google Sites into my classroom. Baby steps to begin! It is fabulous being able to easily see our Learn, Create, Share framework within these sites.

DFI - Session 4 - 20/08/2021

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Sharing has been around since time began and takes many forms, these forms have advanced over time and now have a much greater audience range. An import key point I took out of this was that sharing is not the end of the learn, create, share cycle and that it is essential to have an authentic audience.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Google forms

Learning about this was great, and will come in very handy going forward. I had used Google Forms quite a bit previously but had never made my own. I created a lockdown 2.0 survey and sent it to staff to see how they are going. This will be great for parent involvement and input.

Google Sheets

I do most of my planning on Google Sheets but I still found this deep dive very handy for a couple of new tips and tricks.

Was great to have the time to have a play around on Google Sheets adding up test scores and finding the average. Filtering data will make life a lot easier when we are looking at whole hub data in curriculum areas or even by birthdate. Had lots of fun playing around with this.

Blog Analysis

This would be great to gather data on engagement within student blogs. However my children don not have their own blogs and therefore this isn't a skill I would engage with often. But still great to know how to do it and show this to our senior teachers who use student blogs all the time.

DFI - Session 3 - 13/08/2021

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Create, Create, Create - Provide students with the space and opportunity to create. Hands on, exploring original ideas. Take the time to create!

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a personally and within my classroom?

Youtube

Creating our own YouTube channel and adding playlists to our channel. This will be great for things like read aloud stories, mindfulness music, maths playlists ect. This will be super easy whenever needing to find relevant videos that I want to share with my children. I will spend some time on creating these playlists over the next week and practise using them in the classroom. I have also shared this playlist with my team so we can all add videos to the same playlist.

Google drawing

Great platform for creation, it might be information for parents, other teachers and students and can be made to look very professional. This will be great personally for making notices ect, this would be tricky to use in my classroom setting as we only have 10 iPads for 54 children. But if this changes it would be great to see what they would create.

Google Slides

Developed my own personal Pepeha. This was awesome and great to have the time and support to play around with it. Adding a Mote voice note was fabulous and a great tool to be use

DFI - Session 2 - 6/08/2021

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Gained a further understanding of the Manaiakalani kaupapa specifically around the Ako (Learn aspect). Learn Create Share provides a common language.  The simpler it is the more inclusive it is. Good practice should still be recognisable in any learning environment. How often to do we hear/think/say - Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater!

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Google Meet

Great way to connect with students, awesome because you can see the students faces to connect with them better. We used this a lot in lockdown, both whole class meets and individual check ins. Great to spend time looking at the key functions and features as I haven't really been using Meet. since we came back from lockdown. So was nice to refresh the memory. This would be fabulous to use if you have a students who is away for an extended period of time and would make them feel included.

Google Keep

This is very helpful for taking notes and great for your phone if you have the app. I downloaded the app onto my personal phone as we were speaking about it.

Has a chrome extension on the side bar of your laptop and is great for taking notes and making To Do lists. You can do drawings, make lists, pick words from a text and do voice recording all in the one place. I plan in the next week to spend some time exploring this tool and making things look pretty. Great way to keep all your notes in one place. Very handy wee tool.

Gmail

Helpful tip is to star important emails, this way you can find them easily. I also sorted my emails into categories, which will make my emails more organised. Also the function of how to schedule emails to send at a certain time will be very helpful when one person may be working late at night or to write the email why it's fresh in your mind but not needing it sent till later on. How to translate from another language into English within the email will also be great to connect with our ESOL families in my classroom.

You can add from Google Keep into an email and add emails to My Tasks.
How to un send an email, this will be a life saver if I am ever needing to quickly un send!!!

Adding a signature into the end of your email via settings, you can make multiple signatures for different occasions.

Google Calendar

Helpful to be able to see other peoples calendar both personal and professional and add appointments (these emails have to be Gmail).

You can also create your own event and invite others to attend by sending them an invite. This includes, date, time, attendees ect.

Tame your Tabs

The thing I found most useful from this was pinning my tabs that I use all the time! This will make it much quicker for me to get to these important tabs and takes up less space across the top of the dashboard. Which is also good for the stress levels!

Creating a Meet

Send an invite to the people you are wanting to connect with via email and they will be able to use that code to enter the meet. Again this will be helpful to connect with students, colleagues and for external PD opportunities.

Here is my recording of my Google Meet! Remember to record the Google Meet if you are wanting to watch it back for rewindable learning for both myself and students.

DFI - Session 1 - 30/07/21

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Manaiakalani - How it came about

It begun with a cluster of schools in Tamaki (Auckland) who were looking at how the digital age was impacting our young people and how they could best jump on this wave to positively impact young lives in their cluster. A big focus was providing the same opportunities for children in a decile 1 schools.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

I was able to Add a photo to my Google Profile, which will make it easy for people to identify who I am and who they are speaking to. I also then added a couple of extensions such as colorPicker and Mote to my work computer.

I found moving around the google dashboard has encouraged me to be a little more adventurous and not so scared to get things wrong.  Some of the workings of today I am familiar with but it was great to reassure myself on how they work.  I am very much a person, if I don't use something all the time I lose it!  I am looking forward to having time to play with the apps that we have used today, reading the notes in more depth and taking the time to digest.

Having time to organise my drive was fabulous, my drive was quite organised to begin with but was great to be able to add some pretty colours!

Also loved the comment about how to copy over from another doc and paste it without formatting! Game changer for me.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

This is the create activity that I made to support our junior learners with their reading strategies. I have included links to the GoogleDoc explanation for each of the strategies which can then be read in more depth.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Again having more confidence with how GoogleDocs works and the added tools that I hadn't explored before today. I was great to meet my Bubble Group today too and have a safe, judgement free zone to explore new learning.
